Haim Gouri
חיים גורי
Poet · 1923–2018
Biography
Haim Gouri was born in Tel Aviv in 1923 to pioneer parents and grew up in the youth-movement world that shaped Israel's founding generation.
He fought in the Palmach in the 1948 war and was sent to Europe to help Holocaust survivors reach the Land of Israel — an experience that marked all of his writing.
'Hare'ut' and 'Hine Mutalot Gufoteinu' became the defining poems of the 1948 generation: friendship, loss, and the price of independence.
Gouri later became a leading Israeli poet, journalist and documentary filmmaker, and won the Israel Prize for literature in 1988.
