Matti Caspi, Israeli singer-songwriter, composer & pianist

Biography

Matti Caspi (born 1949 in Kibbutz Hanita) is one of the most influential singer-songwriters in Israeli music.

He writes, composes, arranges and plays much of his own material, blending rock, jazz, classical and Mediterranean sounds into a distinctly personal style.

His 1974 self-titled album, recorded after his army service, includes 'Achrei Shenasat' with lyrics by Shlomo Gronich — a poetic, inward-looking song that became a cult favorite.

Caspi's songs are known for their sophisticated harmonies and emotional directness; he is often cited as a bridge between the classic 'Israeli song' and more modern, personal songwriting.

Caspi passed away in 2026. A moving tribute ceremony was held near the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, where leading Israeli artists gathered to sing his songs and celebrate his legacy.
